The Earthshine House

The Project

In 2012, approximately 1,657 children were recorded in the foster care system in Washington D.C. All children deserve a happy and healthy home and Earthshine House strives to supply that for children making a major life transformation. Eight children live at Earthshine, from anywhere between a few weeks to two years. A foster parent couple lives with the children, along with the help of staff members, to make Earthshine feel like a real family setting. The home will give children energy, light, and hope to positively evolve after a difficult time.

The Concept

The concept is metamorphosis, a significant change in the life cycle of living creatures in the animal kingdom. Alluding back to nature, rhythm will show the different phases of Metamorphosis, also implied in nature. Like in the cycle of the butterfly, contrast is used between the soft form of the caterpillar to the final, complex and beautiful form of the butterfly. Elements such as color and texture will be used to reflect upon the difference of each phase of metamorphosis of the butterfly, from the soft stripes of the caterpillar, to the rigid state of the cocoon and the soft, complex final stage of the adult stage.
